A Dhaka court has placed former DGFI director and dismissed officer Md Afzal Nasher on a six-day remand in connection with the murder case of Delwar Hossain filed at Mirpur Police Station in the capital related to the anti-discrimination movement.

Investigating officer and Detective Branch Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin produced him before the court on Monday, March 30, and sought a seven-day remand. Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki argued in favour of the remand, while defence lawyers applied for bail and sought cancellation of the remand. After hearing arguments, the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyash passed the order.

Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of the Prosecution Branch confirmed the matter.

Afzal Nasher was arrested late on Sunday night from a residence in the Mirpur DOHS area, said Md Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police.

According to the case details, on July 19, 2024, at around 3:30 pm, 500-700 Awami League activists and workers launched an attack using local weapons on a peaceful student-public movement in the Falpatti area of Mirpur-10. Under the direction of Sheikh Mamun Khaled, indiscriminate firing was carried out on the protesters.

Delwar Hossain was critically injured by gunfire and later died on July 21 while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Shyamli.
