Former DIG Nahidul Islam arrested

Former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and ex-Superintendent of Police of Meherpur, A K M Nahidul Islam, has been arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

He was detained from his residence in the capital on Friday night (September 12) on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the International Crimes Tribunal.

A senior DB official confirmed the matter. He stated that an arrest warrant had been issued against A K M Nahidul Islam by the International Crimes Tribunal. Acting on intelligence, DB officers arrested him from his home last night and later handed him over to the investigating authorities concerned.

According to sources, he is the prime accused in the murder of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Tariq Mohammad Saiful Islam, the eldest son of the late Shomir Uddin, former Ameer of Meherpur district Jamaat.
