Former IGP Abdullah Al-Mamun enters tribunal
Former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was brought to the International Crimes Tribunal in the case over crimes against humanity committed during the July–August movement. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal remain fugitives. The verdict will be delivered today in their absence.
Today Monday, after 11am, the verdict is scheduled to be delivered by the three-member judicial panel of Tribunal-1 headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar. The other members are Justice Md Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
At around 9.10am, police brought Mamun to the tribunal from prison in a prison van under heavy security. This is the last time he will be brought to the tribunal in this case. While Hasina and Kamal remain fugitives, the former IGP has been in jail for about a year. However, he testified as an approver. The prosecution has left the question of his punishment to the tribunal while seeking the maximum penalty for Hasina and Kamal.
Security in the tribunal and Supreme Court areas has been heightened ahead of the verdict. Police, Rab, APBn, BGB and army members have been deployed, along with intelligence personnel. From Sunday evening, traffic on the Doel Chattar–Shikkha Bhaban road has been suspended for security reasons, and public movement has been restricted.
