Former MP Momotaz Begom granted bail in High Court
Former MP and popular singer Momotaz Begom has been granted bail by the High Court in three separate cases. A double bench of the High Court passed the order in this regard on Monday (June 15).
Momtaz Begum's lawyer told reporters that she has received a major relief in the legal process for the time being after the High Court granted her bail in three cases.
She was arrested by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police from a house behind Star Kabab in the capital's Dhanmondi area around 12:45pm on May 12.
She is an accused in multiple cases filed in connection with attacks and deaths on students and the public in various areas, including Mirpur, during the anti-discrimination student movement. She has been in jail since her arrest.
Momotaz Begom first became a member of parliament in 2009 on the Awami League's nomination for the reserved women's seat in the ninth National Parliament. Later, she was elected from the Manikganj-2 constituency in the 2014 and 2018 national parliamentary elections with the party symbol.
However, despite receiving the Awami League nomination in the 12th national parliamentary elections in 2024, she could not win. In that election, she was defeated by independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu in the Manikganj-2 constituency.
After her defeat in the election, Momtaz became politically inactive. Later, after the fall of the government, she was arrested while in hiding.
