Former MP Noor Mohammad claims harassment as court grants 3-day remand
Former MP for Jamalpur-1, Md Noor Mohammad, has claimed that he was arrested with the intention of "harassing" him, asserting that he had been staying at home and attending office regularly since the July movement. However, the court ordered him to be placed on a three-day remand after the hearing.
The former MP was produced before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Tejgaon Police Station on Sunday, June 28. The investigating officer applied for a seven-day remand, but the court granted a three-day remand after the hearing.
During the hearing, Noor Mohammad said, "I have been staying at home since August 5, 2024. I did not go out for even a single day. If I had any irregularities, I would not have stayed at home. I went to office regularly from home and returned. I have been arrested to harass me."
Earlier on Saturday evening, he was arrested from a residence in the capital's Gulshan area by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective (DB) Police.
Defence lawyer Mohammad Kamrul Hossain applied for bail and sought cancellation of the remand, stating that Noor Mohammad is a former MP and unwell, requiring regular therapy.
According to the case filing, on June 18, leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its associate organisations brought out a procession at the Mohakhali bus terminal area, shouting anti-state slogans and creating panic by exploding cocktails. Unexploded cocktails, banners, placards and mobile phones were recovered from the scene.
