Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury granted bail

Former speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was granted bail on Sunday afternoon in an attempted murder case. She was released from Kashimpur Women's Central Jail after the bail order was received.

Kashimpur Women's Central Jail Senior Superintendent Kawalin Nahar told Views Bangladesh that after the bail order reached the jail, she was released following due process.

Earlier, a court granted bail to the former speaker, who was arrested from her Dhanmondi residence on April 7 in an attempted murder case filed at Lalbagh Police Station in the capital. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hassan passed the order on Sunday after hearing both sides.

Court sources said Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury was not produced in court in person during the Sunday hearing. Her lawyers argued for bail on her behalf. The attempted murder case was filed over clashes and violence that took place in the Lalbagh area of the capital during the anti-discrimination student movement. She was shown arrested in that case and was released after securing bail.
