Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury detained

Former speaker of the National Parliament Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury has been detained by Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB).

She was picked up from her residence at Road 8/A, Dhanmondi, in the capital around 4:30 am on Tuesday, April 7.

DB chief Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.

He said Chowdhury has been brought to the DB office and is currently in their custody.

The specific case or reason behind her detention was not immediately known. DB officials said details would be disclosed later.

Chowdhury resigned as speaker on September 2, 2024, following the fall of the previous Awami League government. She was first elected speaker on April 30, 2013, after Abdul Hamid was appointed president, and had held the position continuously since then.

She was elected as a member of parliament from the Rangpur-6 constituency.

A case has been filed against Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury over violence during the July mass uprising.
