Four assistant proctors resign a day after JU proctor steps down
Just one day after the Proctor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) resigned, four assistant proctors have also submitted their resignations simultaneously.
The university administration has also appointed a new assistant proctor to fill one of the vacant positions.
The development was confirmed in a press release issued on Thursday by Dr. Mohammad Mohiuddin, Acting Director of the University's Public Relations Office.
The four assistant proctors who resigned are:
Prof. Dr. Mohammad Abdur Razzak (Department of Zoology)
Prof. Shamima Nasrin Joly (Department of Botany)
Prof. Dr. Md. Alamgir Kabir (Department of Physics)
Assistant Professor Mosammat Jannatul Ferdous (Department of Public Health and Informatics)
In a separate office order, the university appointed Associate Professor Dr. Abdus Sattar of the Department of Philosophy as the new Assistant Proctor for a two-year term.
The resignations come a day after Prof. Dr. A.K.M. Rashidul Alam stepped down as Proctor.
According to university sources, student protests began after an alleged attempted rape and attempted murder of a female student by an outsider on campus late on May 12.
Protesters demanded justice for the accused and, as part of their movement, locked the Proctor's Office and declared the Proctor unwelcome. As a result, the Proctor and members of the proctorial body were unable to enter their office for 78 consecutive days.
Some teachers and students also claim that the incident has led to internal divisions among teachers affiliated with the BNP at the university. However, no official statement has been issued by the teachers concerned regarding those allegations.
