Four people, including two students of Jahangirnagar University (JU), sustained burn injuries in a fire at a residential building in Islamnagar, adjacent to the university, on Tuesday night (January 27).

Two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.

The incident took place around 9:00pm on the second floor of a house in the area.

The injured were identified as JU Anthropology Department 47th batch student Md Saiful Islam Rony, Abdus Sobhan Roy, Hasinur and Rahat.

According to JU Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) executive member Mohammad Ali Chishti, a family dispute between two brothers had been ongoing at the house. Rony, accompanied by Hasinur, went there to help resolve the matter. At one stage, the younger brother, Rayhan, allegedly set fire to petrol that had been spread around earlier, triggering a gas cylinder explosion. As a result, all four people present at the scene suffered burn injuries.

Rony and Hasinur were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for emergency treatment, while the other two injured were taken to another hospital. Rony sustained burns to his back, hands and one eye.

JUCSU health and food safety secretary Husni Mobarak said a large portion of Rony’s body had been burnt.

Md Nure Alam Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, said, "One of the injured had been admitted to the burn institute and police personnel had been deployed there."
