Four sentenced to death, nine served life imprisonment in Lt. Tanjim murder case

A court in Cox’s Bazar has sentenced four people to death and nine others to life imprisonment in among 18 accused the murder case of Bangladesh Army officer Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon.

Judge Mohammad Abul Monsur Siddiqui of the Cox’s Bazar Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-5 passed the order on Wednesday (May 20).

However, five accused were acquitted due to lack of evidence, confirmed Public Prosecutor Advocate Khorshed Alam Chowdhury following the ruling.

According to the case documents, Lieutenant Tanjim Sarwar Nirjon was killed during a joint anti-robbery operation in the Dulahazara area of Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar, in the early hours of September 23, 2024.

During the operation, the army officer chased and detained two suspected robbers. At that stage, members of the gang allegedly attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.

He was later taken to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Ramu, where doctors declared him dead.

Following the incident, investigators filed charges against 18 individuals after completing the probe. Authorities initially named 17 accused, but the list was later revised during the investigation process based on evidence and involvement.

The killing of the young army officer had sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns over armed criminal activities in parts of Cox’s Bazar.
