To deal with a possible fuel crisis in the country, fuel oil sale under rationing system has officially started from today (March 8). Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has determined the daily fuel quantity according to the type of vehicle.

Earlier, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood and State Minister Anindya Islam Amit gave necessary instructions to all petrol pumps in the country to implement this new system.

According to BPC information, a motorcycle can take a maximum of 2 liters of petrol or octane per day. In the case of private cars, this limit has been set at 10 liters. 20 to 25 liters of oil have been allocated daily for sports utility vehicles, jeeps and microbuses.

A similar rationing system has been introduced for diesel supply in the transport sector. Buses or pickup vans plying on local routes will be able to take 70 to 80 liters of diesel per day. On the other hand, 200 to 220 liters of diesel per day have been fixed for long-distance buses, trucks, covered vans or container trucks.

The government said that this measure has been taken as a precautionary measure as uncertainty has arisen in global energy supply due to the ongoing war situation in the Middle East.

The Energy Minister said that mobile courts will be operated across the country from today to keep the new distribution system of fuel oil effective. He said that there is sufficient oil stock in the country and two more oil tankers are scheduled to arrive at the port on March 9.

He also said that strict surveillance will be carried out to prevent the creation of artificial crisis or irregularities at the pumps.

The long queues seen at various pumps for the last few days have created concern among the general public. In this situation, the government said that surveillance is also being done to ensure that the pumps do not sell more than the prescribed amount of oil and that there is no discrimination in the rationing system.
