Funeral held for six Bangladeshi peacekeepers killed in Sudan

The funeral of six Bangladeshi peacekeepers, killed in a terrorist attack during a United Nations mission in Sudan, was held at 9:30am on Sunday (December 21) at the central army mosque compound in Dhaka Cantonment.

Senior military and government officials attended the funeral, including Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Admiral M Nazmul Hasan, and Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan. Families of the deceased were also present.

The six fallen peacekeepers are: Corporal Md Masud Rana from Natore, Soldiers Md Mominul Islam and Shanto Mondol from Kurigram, Soldier Shamim Reza from Rajbari, Mess Waiter Md Jahangir Alam from Kishoreganj, and laundry worker Md Sabuj Mia from Gaibandha.

After the funeral prayers, wreaths were laid on behalf of the President, the Home Affairs Adviser, and the Chiefs of Army, Navy, and Air Force to honour the martyrs.

The bodies had arrived in Dhaka at 11:05am on Saturday via Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

The attack took place on December 13 at the Kadugli Logistics Base in the Abyei area of Sudan, where six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and nine others injured in a drone strike by separatist armed groups.

Among the injured are Lieutenant Colonel Khondkar Khalekuzzaman, Sergeant Md Mostakim Hossain, Corporal Afroza Parvin Iti, Lance Corporal Mohibul Islam, Soldier Md Mejbaul Kabir, Soldier Md Umme Hani Akter, Soldier Chumki Akter, and Soldier Md Manazir Ahsan.
