Gardener dies after jackfruit falls on head at DU's Rokeya Hall

A gardener named Chiakul alias Ujjwal, 38, died after a jackfruit fell on his head from a tree on the premises of Dhaka University's (DU) Rokeya Hall.

The accident occurred on Tuesday morning while he was picking jackfruit from a tree in the garden of the Provost Bungalow at Rokeya Hall. He was rescued injured and taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead around 11 am.

His colleague Sunil Chauhan, who took the deceased Chiakul to the hospital, said that both of them work as gardeners at Rokeya Hall. In the morning, they were picking jackfruit from a tree in the hall's garden. At that time, Chiakul stood on the table and tried to pick a jackfruit with the help of bamboo. When the jackfruit hit another tree nearby, it fell on his head.

Sunil Chauhan said that Chiakul fell face down on the paved floor after being hit by the jackfruit. He suffered a serious head injury. He was later rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, but the doctor declared him dead.

The deceased Chiakul is the son of Royjul of Devdun village in Kalia upazila of Narail. He lived in a residential area adjacent to Shahidullah Hall of Dhaka University.

Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost In-charge (Inspector) Md. Faruk said that Chiakul's body has been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy. The matter has been reported to Shahbagh Police Station for investigation.
