Garment workers block Kuril road, causing major traffic disruption
Hundreds of garment workers from Eurozone Fashions staged a protest in the capital’s Kuril area on Wednesday afternoon, blocking both lanes of a major road to demand unpaid wages and allowances. The demonstration brought traffic to a standstill on the busy Badda-Uttara route, causing widespread suffering for commuters.
According to police sources, around 500 workers began the protest at approximately 12 p.m, occupying both the incoming and outgoing lanes of the road in front of the factory. As a result, vehicular movement between Kuril and Badda was completely halted.
The Gulshan Traffic Division alerted the public about the disruption and recommended several alternative routes. In a statement shared on Facebook, the division said, "Around 500 workers of Eurozone Fashions Garments have blocked both directions of the road in Kuril. No vehicles are currently moving between Kuril and Badda."
Suggested diversions; Vehicles from Khilkhet are advised to avoid the flyover and use the surface roads toward Mohakhali and Banani. Vehicles from Rampura heading toward Kuril can take Badda Link Road through Gulshan-1 and Gulshan-2 to reach Uttara. Alternatively, commuters can travel via Notun Bazar and Gulshan-2 to go north. Those heading toward Rampura can follow the reverse route through Kuratoli, using the Mohakhali-Kakoli, Amtoli, or Tejgaon corridors.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Ziaur Rahman of the Gulshan Traffic Division said, “As of 1 p.m, the road remained blocked by the workers. All vehicles on the Uttara-Badda-Rampura route have been stuck, causing severe inconvenience to the public.”
Police have been deployed at the scene and are in talks with both the protesting workers and the factory management in an effort to resolve the situation and restore normal traffic flow.
