The BIWTA authorities have submitted a report to the court after disconnecting the gas and electricity connections of 20 industries operating without ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) on the banks of Shitalakshya river in Narayanganj. The BIWTA submitted a report to the bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Mohammad Asif Hasan on Thursday (May 7).

The court has ordered to submit a report in the form of a report to determine the financial amount of damage due to pollution of the Shitalakshya river.

In a public interest writ filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB), it was alleged that these industries have been polluting the water of the Shitalakshya river by dumping waste for a long time. In view of this, the High Court ordered the disconnection of gas and electricity connections of the 20 related institutions on March 5, 2026.

In the hearing, senior advocate Manzil Morshed, representing HRPB, said, "Operating an industrial plant without a license and ETP from the Department of Environment is a punishable offense under the Environment Act. But due to the lack of effective measures by the administration for a long time, these companies have been polluting the river without any hindrance. He also demanded compensation from the industrial plants responsible for the pollution."
