Gayeshwar urges selfless politics to combat fascism and fundamentalism
Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP’s Standing Committee, has called upon politicians to practice selfless politics in service of the people to halt the growing rise of fascism and fundamentalism in the country.
Speaking at a discussion titled “July Revolution and the Idea of Future Democracy,” organized by the Human Research and Analysis Foundation (HURAF) at the National Press Club on Saturday, Gayeshwar emphasized the need for leaders to prioritize the nation’s interests over personal ambition.
“Don’t go crazy trying to become MPs or ministers. If you genuinely want to gift democracy, you must first sacrifice your own interests. Only then can conspiracies be effectively challenged,” he said.
Responding to allegations that BNP is a proxy of India, Gayeshwar stated, “Those who once led anti-discrimination movements are now fostering new forms of discrimination.”
He also criticized the indefinite tenure of the current interim government, contrasting it with the caretaker government system, which legally mandates a 90-day term. “The interim government’s tenure is limitless. As long as it lasts, it claims legitimacy. If that’s not the case, why can’t they hold free and fair elections to fulfill the people’s demand for an elected government? If caretaker governments can hold elections within 90 days, why has the interim government taken two years?” he questioned.
Gayeshwar further highlighted discrepancies in political demands, noting that those currently advocating for proportional representation (PR) had not mentioned it in the original 31-point demands.
