Gazette issued declaring Mirza Fakhrul president
The Election Commission (EC) has issued a gazette notification declaring Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the 23rd President of Bangladesh. This information came from the notification signed by Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the EC Secretariat, on Thursday (August 20). The EC issued the notification in the evening after the vote count in Parliament concluded.
The notification stated that, in accordance with Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991 (Act No. 27 of 1991) and the declaration of the Returning Officer and Election Commissioner, Mr Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, son of Mirza Ruhul Amin, of village Kalibari, Post Office Thakurgaon 5100, Thakurgaon Sadar, Thakurgaon Municipality, Thakurgaon, is declared to have been elected to the office of President of the People's Republic of Bangladesh under Rule 12(6) of the Presidential Election Rules, 1991.
It may be noted that Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP's candidate and the party's former secretary general, won the country's 23rd presidential election with 255 votes on Thursday (August 20). His rival, Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, received 88 votes. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir will thus occupy the country's presidential office for the next five years.
