Gazette notifications issued on Shahabuddin's resignation and Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assuming presidential duties

The Cabinet Division has issued two separate gazette notifications regarding President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation and Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assuming the duties of the president. The notifications, issued on Friday (July 24), were published on Saturday (July 25).

The first notification, signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, stated that President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from his post on Friday in accordance with Article 50(3) of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, and that his resignation took immediate effect.

The second notification stated that following President Shahabuddin's resignation on Friday, under Article 54 of the Constitution, Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Bir Bikram, will perform the duties of the president until a new president is elected. This order also took immediate effect.

President Shahabuddin cited serious health issues in his resignation letter, stating that he suffers from heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney complications, and that recent medical examinations had diagnosed him with autonomic neuropathy, which causes momentary loss of consciousness .

It may be noted that regarding the selection of the new president, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had earlier stated that a final decision on the matter would be taken through discussions in the party's policy-making forum.
