Gazi Nazrul, first wife shown arrested over second wife’s death

Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda Islam have been formally shown arrested in a case filed over the alleged abetment of suicide following the death of his 19-year-old second wife, Mariam Khatun.

Police took Nazrul and Maksuda into custody for questioning after Mariam’s hanging body was recovered from Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of the NAM Bhaban complex in Dhaka on Sunday evening.

They were later shown arrested in the case filed by Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

Police later prepared an inquest report and sent the body to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. CID, PBI and DB teams also collected evidence from the scene.

According to the complaint, Mariam married Gazi Nazrul Islam in June and lived in the flat with him and his first wife, Maksuda Islam. Her father alleged that she had repeatedly told family members over the phone that she was facing physical and mental abuse after the marriage.

The complaint named Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam’s uncle Md Obaidur Rahman as accused. Her father alleged that Mariam took her own life after failing to endure the alleged abuse.

Police also recovered a handwritten note from the room. The contents of the note have been cited in the case, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death.

Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibne Mizan said legal action would be taken in accordance with the law.
