Gazi Nazrul remanded for 4 more days

A court has ordered Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam to be taken on a four-day remand for the second time in a case filed over the abetment of the suicide of his second wife, Mariam.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain issued the order on Thursday, September 24, after a hearing.

After the end of the first four-day remand, the investigating officer of the case, Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Detective Branch's (DB) Tejgaon zonal team, produced Gazi Nazrul Islam in court on Thursday and applied for a seven-day remand. After the hearing, the court granted a four-day remand.

Prosecution division SI Rafiqul Islam said a seven-day remand was sought. After the hearing, the court granted a four-day remand.

Gazi Nazrul Islam was brought to court in a white DB car at 4:04pm. He was later kept in the lockup and produced before the judge. He stood in the dock during the hearing.

The defence applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand application. However, the state opposed it. After the hearing, the judge issued the order at 4:47pm.

On the evening of September 20, police recovered the hanging body of Gazi Nazrul Islam's second wife, Mariam, from a flat in the Nyam building opposite the Parliament building. That night, police took MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Makchuda, into custody.

Later, Mariam's father, S M Masum Billah, filed a case against Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Makchuda Islam and the deceased's uncle Obaidur Rahman on charges of abetment of suicide.

The next day, following an application by SI Md Shamsuzzoha Sarkar of Sherebangla Nagar Police Station, the court granted a four-day remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for Makchuda Begum. That same night, the investigation of the case was handed over to the Detective Police.

After the remand, Makchuda Begum was sent to jail on September 22. On the other hand, after Gazi Nazrul Islam's four-day remand ended, he was produced in court again on Thursday with a remand application.

Additionally, the third accused in the case, Obaidur Rahman, was arrested from outside Dhaka by SRB-2 on Wednesday. He was later sent to jail through court.
