Gazi Nazrul's first wife Maksuda sent to jail after remand

A court has ordered the sending of Maksuda Begum, first wife of MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, to jail after a one-day remand in the case over the abetment of suicide of his second wife, Mariam Khatun.

The order was given when she was produced before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ripon Hossain on Tuesday, September 22.

After the remand, the investigating officer of the case, Inspector Mohammad Salauddin of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) Tejgaon Zonal Team, produced Maksuda before the court and applied to keep her in custody. In the application, he mentioned that important information related to the case was obtained during interrogation, which will help advance the investigation. The court then ordered her to be sent to jail. No bail application was filed on Maksuda's behalf that day.

Earlier on Monday, the court granted a four-day remand for Gazi Nazrul Islam and a one-day remand for Maksuda Begum in the case over abetment of suicide. The investigation of the case was later transferred to the DB.

On Sunday evening, police recovered Mariam's hanging body from a flat in the Nyam building in Shere Bangla Nagar in the capital. In the incident, Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife Maksuda were taken into custody at night. Later, Mariam's father, S M Masum Billah, filed a case against Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda and Mariam's uncle Obaidur Rahman on charges of abetment of suicide.

In the First Information Report (FIR), Mariam's father alleged that his daughter was married to Gazi Nazrul in June. After the marriage, Mariam used to live with Gazi Nazrul and Maksuda in that flat in the Nyam building. The FIR further claimed that after the marriage, Mariam had informed family members about being subjected to physical and mental torture over various matters. On Sunday afternoon, Nazrul called Mariam's father and asked him to come home quickly. The case stated that upon reaching there, he saw his daughter hanging.

The FIR further stated that several handwritten notes were found on Mariam's bed. It alleged that they contained words about her mental anguish, feelings of being deceived and despair over a relationship. The investigation is examining these matters along with the sequence of events before and after the death. Meanwhile, multiple media outlets reported that Gazi Nazrul Islam has denied the allegations brought against him.
