Ghulam Azam's 'shoe-beating' photo put up at DUCSU museum

After two photographs of Muhammad Ali Jinnah were torn down at the historic museum of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU), a photograph of former Jamaat-e-Islami ameer Ghulam Azam being beaten with shoes has now been put up. Ghulam Azam was executed for crimes against humanity.

The photograph was put up at the museum around noon on Sunday, September 13. The caption of the photograph reads, "On January 1, 1981, when he came to Baytul Mukarram to attend the funeral prayers of two Bangladeshis martyred in the Palestine war, the worshippers present beat him with shoes."

The photograph was put up by Arka Barua, a student of Dhaka University's Theatre and Performance Studies department. He is the organising secretary of the Dhaka University Chhatra Federation.

Speaking to Bangla Tribune about putting up Ghulam Azam's photograph, Arka Barua said, "Basically, the DUCSU museum here is meant to be an archive of the struggles of the people of Bangladesh, of the historical history of the people of Bangladesh."

He said, "Why have I put this photograph in the place of that archive of historical history? Because we clearly see that when our DUCSU's Liberation War affairs secretary put up Jinnah's photograph here, he said he did it because he felt like it. So, I felt like it, and so I put up Ghulam Azam's photograph."
