The Ministry of Finance has allocated an additional Tk 100 crore for emergency embankment repair under the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in the revised budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year.

The supplementary allocation has been provided from the “Contingency Expenditure Management” head, following a proposal from the Ministry of Water Resources, subject to specific conditions.

According to officials, the Water Resources Ministry had earlier sought an additional Tk 300 crore to support river erosion prevention and urgent repair works during the monsoon season. The request highlighted the widespread damage caused by river erosion, which displaces thousands of families each year and destroys homes, farmland, and public infrastructure such as schools and mosques.

In the revised budget for FY 2025–26, Tk 540 crore had already been allocated under the BWDB’s operational budget for emergency embankment repair. Of this amount, Tk 269.92 crore had been spent as of April 2026, leaving Tk 270.08 crore unutilised.

Despite the remaining balance, authorities noted that ongoing monsoon risks, combined with the limited time left in the fiscal year (April–June), justified additional funding to strengthen erosion control and protective infrastructure.

Following review, the Finance Division approved the additional Tk 100 crore, citing disaster preparedness needs and the government’s development and disaster management priorities.

The allocation comes with strict conditions, including that the funds must be reflected under the same economic code for emergency embankment repair in the revised budget, cannot be used for any other purpose, must comply with existing financial regulations, and require formal approval through government orders duly endorsed by the Finance Division.
