Government appoints economist Mahbub Ullah as National Professor

The government has appointed distinguished academic, economist and political analyst Professor Mahbub Ullah as a National Professor.

A notification was issued on Monday (July 27) by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education. The notification, signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Naima Khandaker, confirmed the appointment.

According to the notification, Professor Mahbub Ullah will serve as a National Professor for a term of five years. He will not be considered a government official but will receive salary, allowances and other benefits according to Grade-1 of the National Pay Scale-2015.

As part of his duties, he will be affiliated with a research or educational institution of his choice to conduct research on subjects of his preference. He will be required to inform the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the University Grants Commission (UGC) about the subject and progress of his research.

Additionally, he will submit annual reports on the progress of education and research at the institution he is affiliated with. He will also keep the UGC chairman informed about the progress of his research and send the knowledge and information gained from his research to the Secondary and Higher Education Division and the UGC.

The notification further stated that during his tenure as National Professor, he will not be allowed to hold any other salaried position.

Professor Mahbub Ullah is a former professor of the Department of Economics and the Department of Development Studies at Dhaka University. He is currently serving as the convener of the interim committee of the Bangladesh Economic Association. He also served as the first Vice-Chancellor of the National University.
