Government approves formation of Cumilla WASA to modernize water, sanitation system

The government has taken a policy decision to establish the Cumilla Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) aimed at modernising and ensuring a sustainable water supply and sanitation system in Cumilla city.

The decision was made at a meeting held at the Local Government Division conference room at the Secretariat on Wednesday (May 13), with representatives from various ministries in attendance.

The meeting was chaired by Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Officials said discussions focused on the city’s rapidly growing population, urban expansion, and the urgent need for a modernised drinking water supply and sewage management system.

Speaking at the meeting, the minister said the formation of Cumilla WASA is a timely initiative to ensure an efficient and structured water management system for city residents.

He instructed all concerned departments to coordinate closely and expedite necessary procedures for implementing the decision. He also emphasised the importance of ensuring safe and sustainable water services through long-term planning.

Among those present were Cumilla-6 MP Monirul Haque Chowdhury, Local Government Division Secretary Md. Shahidul Hasan, and Cumilla City Corporation Administrator Yusuf Molla Tipu, along with senior government officials.
