Government approves three new upazilas, one police station
The government has approved the creation of three new upazilas and one new police station as part of its ongoing administrative restructuring aimed at improving public service delivery and local governance.
The decision was taken at the 121st meeting of the National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation (NICAR), held at the Cabinet Division conference room at the Secretariat on Wednesday (July 1).
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
The newly approved upazilas are Fatikchhari North in Chattogram, Bangra in Cumilla and South Gafargaon (Pagla) in Mymensingh.
The committee also approved the establishment of Halda Police Station in Chattogram.
Under the decision, Fatikchhari North Upazila will be formed with six unions carved out of Fatikchhari Upazila, while Bangra Upazila will be created by dividing Muradnagar Upazila in Cumilla. South Gafargaon Upazila will comprise eight unions currently under Pagla Police Station in Gafargaon Upazila. Meanwhile, Halda Police Station will be established by splitting the existing Hathazari Police Station.
Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister, Hasan Shiplu, said the meeting also approved a proposal to incorporate the portions of the Purbachal New Town Project located in Narayanganj and Gazipur into the administrative boundary of Dhaka district.
Officials from the Cabinet Division said the decisions will come into effect after the issuance of official gazette notifications. Subsequent steps will include demarcating administrative boundaries, appointing personnel and completing other institutional formalities.
The meeting was attended by senior cabinet members, including Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, and other senior government officials.
