Government clarification over confusion surrounding Dr. Yunus' VVIP tenure cut

Misleading information has circulated in the media and on social media regarding the six-month reduction of the VVIP status tenure of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the former chief adviser to the interim government.

The Prime Minister's Office has finally provided a clear explanation on this matter. The government has confirmed that Dr. Yunus' VVIP status and security have neither been canceled nor diminished in any manner.

After reviewing high-level government sources and relevant notifications, it has been established that Dr. Yunus will continue to receive special security provisions for a full year, in accordance with the previously announced regulations. This means he will remain under the protection of the Special Security Force (SSF) for the designated period that was already established.

On Monday, various media outlets in the country reported that Dr. Yunus' VVIP status period had been shortened by six months, indicating that he would no longer receive SSF protection after August 10. However, the government has categorically stated that this assertion is entirely incorrect and does not reflect the truth.

The confusion primarily arises from the new notification issued on April 23. This notification clarifies that the previous order, which was issued on February 10, 2026, remains ‘unchanged’.

According to that order, Dr. Yunus is entitled to VVIP status and special security benefits for one year following the transfer of office. Furthermore, the new notification specifies that a six-month VVIP security provision will apply to individuals who resign from the positions of President, Prime Minister, or Principal Adviser in the future.

However, this new regulation does not pertain to Dr. Yunus; he will continue to benefit from the prior one-year provision.

From a legal perspective, the situation is also clear. A senior lawyer from the Supreme Court has indicated that since the new notification explicitly states that the previous order will be upheld, there are no legal complications concerning Dr. Yunus’s security.

In summary, it can be concluded that Dr. Yunus’s VVIP status and security have not been altered in any way.
