Government considering splitting DMP
The government is considering dividing the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) to further improve the law and order situation in the capital. A proposal is being made to divide the area under its jurisdiction into Dhaka North, Dhaka South or more than one part.
The issue was discussed at a meeting of the National Committee for the Implementation of Administrative Reforms held at the office of the Chief Adviser in Tejgaon on Tuesday (January 20).
The meeting was presided over by the government's Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus. However, no final decision has been taken so far.
At a briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the afternoon, the Chief Adviser's Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, said that if the DMP is divided into two or more parts, the speed of its work will increase and the law and order situation can be controlled better.
Shafiqul Alam said that the size of Dhaka is gradually increasing. Dhaka is not the same city as before. A new survey has shown that Dhaka is now the second largest city in the world. Managing law and order here is very complicated. In this situation, the issue of how to control crime in the city easily and effectively was discussed in the meeting.
He further said that the meeting discussed whether the DMP should be divided into two parts (north and south) or whether it would be better to divide it into multiple parts. According to the previous model, there were once Gulshan and Mirpur municipalities. That model was also discussed. However, no final decision has been made yet.
