Government determined to crack down on misinformation on digital platforms: PM's Adviser

The government has taken an initiative to form a panel of lawyers and experts to prevent the spread of misinformation, disinformation and fake videos targeting innocent and respectable individuals. Through this initiative, effective measures will be taken to tackle online propaganda and cyberbullying on digital platforms.

Prime Minister's Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman disclosed the information at a press conference at the Information Department at the Secretariat on Tuesday (July 21). Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed was also present.

Dr Zahed Ur Rahman said that many innocent and respectable people in the country are being defamed through the spread of misinformation, disinformation and fake videos on social media. The government is determined to prevent such activities.

He said cyberbullying is being carried out against many people using digital platforms. It is the government's responsibility to protect citizens from such harassment. With that aim, an initiative has been taken to form a panel comprising lawyers and relevant experts.

The adviser also said the government will ensure proper application of existing laws to prevent disinformation and digital harassment, and necessary measures will be taken in this regard.
