Government prioritising democratic reforms, economic recovery: Mirza Fakhrul

Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the government is working to build a democratic, inclusive and exploitation-free Bangladesh, with strengthening democratic institutions, reviving the economy and improving people's quality of life at the centre of its agenda.

He made the remarks while addressing the 'Bengal Delta Conference 2026' as chief guest at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Friday (July 24).

Mirza Fakhrul said the aspirations generated by the student-led mass movement, the demand for the restoration of democracy and the country's political transition have created new opportunities for Bangladesh's future development.

He said the government has attached priority to economic restructuring, attracting investment, generating employment, reforming the banking sector, promoting industrial growth, modernising agriculture and expanding the creative economy to ensure sustainable national progress.

Highlighting constitutional reform, he said the government has initiated discussions with political parties to build a national consensus on necessary constitutional and institutional changes.

The minister also stressed the importance of expanding regional and international cooperation, saying stronger engagement with global development partners would be vital for sustaining Bangladesh's economic transformation.

Expressing optimism about the country's future, Mirza Fakhrul said Bangladesh can build a more prosperous, secure and dignified society through unity, courage and effective governance.

The conference was attended by local and international researchers, policymakers, diplomats, development experts, business leaders and representatives of civil society.
