Government prioritising technical education: Education Minister

Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has said the government is placing the highest priority on technical education to transform the country's vast human resources into skilled manpower. Alongside the conventional education system, there is no alternative to technical and technology-driven education.

He made the remarks at a commemorative meeting organised to mark the historic July mass uprising at the Government Polytechnic Institute in the capital on Saturday (August 1).

The Education Minister said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is giving the highest importance to technical education. Major changes are needed in the education system to skill the country's youth.

He said it is not possible to harness the country's vast human resources by relying solely on the conventional education system. Therefore, opportunities for technical education must be further expanded. As part of this, initiatives have been taken to establish four new engineering colleges across the country.

Ehsanul Haque Milon said international cooperation is also being increased to improve the quality of technical education in the country. During the Prime Minister's visit to China, a memorandum of understanding was signed with China for the improvement and skill development of Bangladesh's technical education.

Recalling the July movement at the event, the Education Minister said the memories of July can never be erased. The memories and contributions of those who sacrificed for the country must be preserved for future generations.

He said skilled human resources are Bangladesh's future. Therefore, the education system must be made job-oriented and technology-driven to prepare the country's youth for both domestic and international labour markets.

He also assured that a proposal would be submitted to the Prime Minister to address transport crises at the university and college levels. He also spoke about modernising the education system.

Also speaking at the event, Sanjida Tuli, chief coordinator of 'Mayer Dak' and MP for the reserved women's seat, said, "To move the country forward, everyone must work beyond partisanship. There is no compromise against autocracy."

Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib said, "While there may be differences in student politics in Bangladesh, there is no difference over July." Speakers shared memories of those who were martyred and injured in the July movement.
