Government to appoint 100,000 health workers, 25,000 midwives

The government has planned to appoint about 100,000 new health workers to further expand healthcare services in the country and reach the general public. In addition, initiatives are being taken to appoint 25,000 midwives with expertise in midwifery within the next three years.

On Sunday (June 21), Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr. SM Ziauddin Haider made the disclosure while talking to media on contemporary issues at the Secretariat after returning home after a visit to Lisbon, Portugal. Ziauddin Haider also said that before appointing a large number of midwives, they will be trained to improve the quality of services at the field level. He said that the government has already taken necessary initiatives to improve the quality of training.

The Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health said that Bangladesh will appoint about 100,000 new health workers within the next three to four years. So that we can reach healthcare, especially preventive healthcare, to the doorstep of every person. In addition, we will recruit 25,000 midwives in phases over the next three to four years.

He further said, our aim is that when any of our mothers has a normal delivery, she can be taken to a union health center. What we call primary healthcare units, there will be one primary healthcare unit in each union. There will also be one primary healthcare unit in each ward of the city. The normal deliveries in these primary healthcare units will take place here. At least two midwives will be on duty in each primary healthcare unit.
