Government to honour 100 eminent teachers, each to receive Tk 1 lakh
The government has taken an initiative to honour 100 eminent teachers across the country on the occasion of Teachers' Day, awarding each Tk 1 lakh.
Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister Dr A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon made the announcement at the first steering committee meeting at the Ministry of Education on Sunday, September 6.
The minister said the previous government used to award 12 teachers with Tk 2 lakh each, totalling Tk 24 lakh. The current government wants to recognise the dignity, cooperation and work of teachers, which is why it has taken this initiative.
He said it is the government's responsibility to recognise, reward and encourage those who have done good work. The initiative has been taken following the Prime Minister's wishes.
The minister said a policy for honouring teachers will be finalised, with discussions involving steering committee members, university vice-chancellors and the UGC chairman.
When asked about transparency in the previous government's teacher award system, the minister declined to comment but said the current government wants to ensure transparency in its own selection and award process. A broad-based steering committee has been formed for this purpose.
