Government to reopen seven idle Jute mills
The government will reopen seven previously closed jute mills as part of efforts to revive the sector and create employment, the Ministry of Textiles and Jute announced Thursday (March 5).
The announcement coincides with the upcoming National Jute Day on Friday (March 6), which will be inaugurated online by President Md. Sahabuddin, according to State Minister for Textiles and Jute Shariful Alam.
The ministry is also organising a nine-day Jute and Diversified Jute Products Fair from March 6 to 14 at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy grounds. The fair will bring together buyers, entrepreneurs, traders, and stakeholders, the minister said, inviting all to participate.
State Minister Alam highlighted that the remaining jute mills will be revived under private management, while already leased mills currently employ 7,200 workers, contributing significantly to production and job creation.
The minister emphasised that reopening the mills aligns with the government’s broader goal of building a modern, democratic, upper-middle-income economy by 2034, supporting employment generation, and fulfilling electoral promises.
