Government announces special incentive for rooftop solar power installation

The government has announced a special incentive package for battery-included rooftop solar power systems to increase the use of renewable energy and ensure sustainable energy security. Consumers will get Tk 10.50 per unit for surplus electricity supplied to the national grid for a specific period under this arrangement, according to a press release signed by Muhammad Arif Sadek, Information and Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, on Tuesday (September 1).

The press release said the cost of installing battery-included rooftop solar power systems has been fixed at a maximum of Tk 8 per unit considering the current market rates and prices in various tenders of the Power Division. Adding a special incentive of 20 percent profit and 11.25 percent premium to this, the price of electricity per unit has been set at Tk 10.50.

If any consumer can install the solar power system at a cost lower than Tk 8, the savings will be considered as their profit.

As per the Net Metering Guidelines, 2025, those consumers who install rooftop solar power systems by February 28, 2027 and supply surplus electricity to the national grid after their own use will receive Tk 10.50 per unit until February 28, 2030.

Power distribution companies will preserve consumers’ information, determine the quantity of electricity supplied to the national grid and maintain records related to the price of electricity including the incentive. The incentive money will be sent to consumers’ bank or mobile banking accounts. Cash payment will not be made under any circumstances.

However, this incentive will not be applicable for solar power systems installed after February 28, 2027.

The government press release further said that solar panels, batteries, inverters, meters and other related equipment used in installing the solar power system must conform to the technical standards set by the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution and the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority.

Besides, policy support in this regard will be provided from the One-Stop Service Centre of the Power Division. Necessary assistance will also be available from the district and upazila level offices of the power distribution companies.

According to the press release, this special incentive package has come into effect from September 1, 2026.
