Govt approves emergency purchase of 300,000mt of diesel

The government has granted approval to purchase 300,000 metric tons of diesel through direct procurement, bypassing competitive tendering, to meet the country’s urgent fuel needs.

The decision was taken Thursday (March 26) at the online meeting of the Economic Affairs Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by its convener and Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

The session marked the 29th meeting for the 2025–26 fiscal year and the sixth in 2026.

Sources said the approvals aim to secure fuel supply amid geopolitical instability caused by the Iran and US–Israel tensions.

Under the plan, AP Energy Investment Limited has been authorised to procure 1,00,000 metric tons of diesel directly from the international market, while Superstar International Group will supply 2,00,000 metric tons of EN 590 standard diesel.
