The government has given policy approval to relocate the Sayedabad Inter-District Bus Terminal to Kanchpur as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion in the capital.

The approval came at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, at the Secretariat on Wednesday (July 8).

According to meeting sources, the new terminal has been instructed to be made operational within four months, following directives from the prime minister.

Considering the project a matter of national urgency, the infrastructure will be built under the Direct Procurement Method (DPM) through the Bangladesh Navy, with state-owned Chittagong Dry Dock Limited implementing the work.

The project includes the construction of terminal sheds, ticket counters, toilets, office rooms and other supporting facilities.

Under the government's plan to modernise Dhaka's traffic management, the Local Government Division has directed Dhaka South City Corporation to complete all necessary infrastructure and relocation work within the stipulated timeframe.

The project has an estimated cost of Tk 6.88 crore.

Planned facilities include a 4,012-square-metre passenger platform, terminal sheds, 120 ticket counters, 32 toilets, office space, partitions and other essential infrastructure.

Officials believe shifting the terminal to Kanchpur will significantly reduce traffic pressure in the Sayedabad area and improve transport management in the eastern part of Dhaka.
