Govt bearing burden of fragile economy: Info Minister
Zahir Uddin Swapon said the current government is carrying the burden of a fragile economy left behind by the previous Awami League administration.
“We are bearing a debt burden of Tk 30 lakh crore. The present government has to carry the weight of the fragile economy left by the Awami League government,” he said on Wednesday (May 13).
The minister made the remarks while addressing the prize-giving ceremony for the final winners of the month-long Islamic competition “Alokito Mahe Ramadan” in Uttara.
He said it would take at least two years to make the economy self-reliant again and urged people to remain united during the period.
“No one should be allowed to divide us politically at this time,” he said.
Zahir Uddin Swapon also said the country’s economy could not be restored unless people remained united.
Referring to social and religious issues, the information minister said there was a time when keeping a beard or wearing a cap was viewed with suspicion. He alleged that attacks on various religious institutions had been staged in a planned manner to create religious tensions.
He added that the event demonstrated that a peaceful political and social environment currently prevails in the country
