Govt began fulfilling pledges before ink on ballots dried: PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said his government began implementing its election pledges immediately after assuming office, “even before the ink of the vote had faded.”
He made the remarks on Saturday (March 14) after inaugurating a financial assistance programme for imams, muezzins, and priests.
The prime minister said the event brought together individuals who had earned public respect without obligation and from whom people often seek guidance during difficult moments of life. The newly launched financial assistance programme would also be expanded gradually in the future across the country.
"The government would work to reduce inequality by expanding financial support and creating employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities—commitments made ahead of the national election," he said.
Highlighting several ongoing initiatives, the prime minister said, "A 'Family Card' programme has been introduced to support economically vulnerable women and will be expanded nationwide in phases.
A “Farmers Card” scheme is set to launch on April 14, coinciding with the Pohela Boishakh celebrations, while a canal excavation program will begin in Dinajpur on March 16, he added.
He said the government aims to ensure both political and economic empowerment for every citizen, building a strong foundation that would prevent any form of authoritarianism from undermining people’s freedoms in the future.
The event was attended by imams, khatibs, and muezzins, along with religious leaders from Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian communities, including priests, sevaits, and heads of monasteries.
