Govt committed to ensuring girls’ education, safety: PM
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today said the government is pursuing clear policies and action plans to ensure education, safety, dignity and a brighter future for girls.
“The incumbent government is committed to ensuring that no girl’s dreams are cut short by economic constraints, insecurity or discrimination,” he said in a message issued here on the occasion of National Girl Child Day-2026, to be observed tomorrow.
The theme of this year’s day is “No More Child Marriage, Girls Will Conquer the World.”
The Prime Minister said every girl, equipped with education, skills and self-confidence, should have equal opportunities to realise her full potential.
He said ensuring a safe environment where every girl could grow up and pursue her aspirations freely was the responsibility of the state.
Recalling former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia’s contribution to girls’ education, Tarique Rahman said she had introduced free education for girls up to Class XII.
Building on that initiative, the present government had expanded free education opportunities for women up to the postgraduate level, he added.
The Prime Minister said women’s political and economic empowerment was closely linked to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for girl children.
As part of its efforts to strengthen women’s economic empowerment, the government is issuing ‘Family Card’ in the names of female heads of households. Initiatives have also been taken to improve education, healthcare, nutrition and social protection for girls and women, he said.
Tarique Rahman said the government wanted to create an environment where every girl could move freely, learn, speak and express her views without fear.
“Families, society, educational institutions and the state must work together to protect girls’ safety, dignity and rights in both physical and digital spaces,” he said.
Emphasising the importance of education, affection, rights and equal opportunities for girls, the Prime Minister said these were essential to building a healthy, educated and developed society.
“We want the birth of a girl child to be a blessing for the family . . . the current government is working tirelessly to build a state and society where a girl’s education is never interrupted for any reason and where she can move forward according to her own choices and capabilities,” he said.
The Prime Minister called for stronger collective efforts to prevent child marriage and all forms of discrimination and to ensure a safe, equal and promising future for every girl.
He extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to all girl children, their guardians and the people of the country on the occasion of National Girl Child Day.
