Govt formulating new policy for online news portals

The government is formulating a new policy for the registration and operation of online news portals, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasir Khan Chowdhury has informed parliament.

Responding to a starred question from Jamalpur-3 MP Mostafizur Rahman Babu during the second session and first budget session of the 13th National Parliament on Sunday, June 7, the state minister said the ministry is working on a new policy to bring more discipline to the registration and operation of online news portals.

He also said that the inclusion of district-based newspapers with poor publication records in the Directorate of Films and Publications list is being reviewed.

"We are examining whether those newspapers followed the proper process for listing. Action will be taken against those involved in any irregularities," Chowdhury said.

During the session, Cox's Bazar-3 MP Lutfor Rahman expressed concern over the spread of false and misleading information through media.
