The Jatiya Sangsad has agreed to form a 10-member joint special committee comprising ruling and opposition lawmakers to address the country’s ongoing energy crisis.

The decision was announced during Thursday’s parliamentary session following an unscheduled discussion on the issue. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman proposed the initiative, which was welcomed by Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.

The committee will consist of five members from the government and five from the opposition. Power and Energy Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku has been proposed as the chair of the panel.

Government members include State Minister Anindya Islam Amit, MPs ABM Ashraf Uddin Nizan, Moinul Islam Khan Shanto, and Mia Nuruddin Opu. The opposition has been asked to submit its nominations soon.

Speaking in Parliament, the Prime Minister said the energy crisis is a global challenge requiring national unity and dialogue. He emphasised that all parties must work together in the interest of the country and its people.

Opposition Leader Dr. Shafiqur Rahman supported the proposal, calling it a “new beginning” for parliamentary cooperation on national issues and pledged to submit names for the committee shortly.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed hailed the consensus as a positive step, saying collaborative efforts between the two sides could help resolve major national challenges.
