Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar, adviser to the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, has said that the government plans to cut down on the annual holidays in both government and private primary schools to maximize classroom time.

He shared this information during a press conference on Sunday (September 7), marking International Literacy Day.

"Steps will be taken to limit teachers' involvement in extracurricular activities that affect teaching hours," the adviser said.

He said that the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education will collaborate with the Ministry of Education to implement these changes.

Currently, schools are in session for only 180 days each year.

Regarding the long-standing issue of vacant head teacher positions, the adviser revealed that around 32,000 institutions are currently without head teachers due to delays in promotions caused by ongoing lawsuits.

The ministry plans to fill 80% of these positions through promotions and 20% through direct recruitment. Furthermore, the ministry is working to make teacher transfers 100% online.
