The BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has set a target of issuing Farmers Card to 24 million farmers across the country over the next four years. In the current 2026-27 fiscal year, the plan is to bring 4.3 million farmers under the programme.

The programme will be rolled out in phases across 14,180 agricultural blocks in 503 upazilas of all 64 districts. So far, data has been collected from 1.925 million farmers in 1,681 agricultural blocks, and 900,000 bank accounts linked to the card have been opened.

On October 1, the programme’s activities were launched simultaneously in 77 upazilas across 56 districts. In this phase, an initiative has been taken to enrol 110,165 farmers, and there are plans to provide agricultural input assistance to 100,147 farmers. Landless, marginal and small farmers are being given priority in the initial stage.

Earlier, from March to June this year, cards were distributed to 20,832 farmers in 11 agricultural blocks in 11 upazilas of 10 districts across eight divisions under a pre-piloting phase. During this phase, 20,480 farmers received financial incentives of Tk 2,500 each per year, totalling Tk 51.2 million.

Md. Yasin, additional secretary at the Farmers Card Cell of the Ministry of Agriculture, said the programme’s main goal is to maintain accurate farmer data and make the delivery of government support simple and effective. He said data collection, verification, bank account opening and card distribution are being carried out in a coordinated manner.

Agriculture Secretary Md. Selim Khan said the Farmers Card will make it possible to identify genuine farmers and provide them with agricultural inputs and financial support according to their needs.

He said the card will provide 10 types of services, including low-interest agricultural loans, irrigation, fertiliser, seeds, incentives, crop insurance, weather information and advice on pesticide use. Alongside ensuring farmers receive the respect they deserve, the card will also convey the message that the government and the state stand beside them.
