Govt to introduce trial load shedding in Dhaka
The government has decided to introduce trial load shedding in Dhaka due to a shortfall in electricity generation, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Anindya Islam Amit said on Thursday (April 23).
Speaking in parliament under Rule 300, the state minister said the move aims to ensure uninterrupted irrigation in the agricultural sector and reduce the urban-rural disparity in power distribution.
“We have taken the decision to implement trial load shedding in Dhaka so that farmers in rural areas are not affected and receive adequate electricity for irrigation,” he said.
According to official data shared by the minister, electricity demand on Wednesday stood at 16,000 megawatts, while generation was recorded at 14,126 megawatts, leaving a deficit of 2,086 megawatts.
He added that discussions between the government and opposition parties on the energy situation have yielded a consensus on addressing the crisis. As part of this effort, the prime minister has proposed forming a 10-member committee to help ensure stable power supply.
The government is also consulting with opposition leaders to formulate measures aimed at maintaining uninterrupted electricity across the country.
