Govt to safeguard media freedom: Info Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said the government will ensure the highest level of media freedom while defining accountability in consultation with journalists and other stakeholders to provide unrestricted information to the public.

He made the remarks at a press briefing following a meeting at the Barishal Circuit House on Friday (February 27).

The minister noted that the country’s media system has yet to fully adapt to a technology-driven ecosystem. “Our goal is to modernise overall media management. When the Ministry of Information was established, technology-based media did not exist. Although tech-driven media has expanded, full adaptation is still a work in progress,” he said.

Addressing questions about recent disputes between judges and lawyers in Barishal courts, the minister said he is not fully aware of the issues but will coordinate with the District Commissioner and the Law Minister to resolve them.

Earlier, the minister distributed BRTA compensation checks to 61 road accident victims totaling Tk 2.17 crore.
