Govt to support farmers affected by heavy rain: PM
The government will provide assistance to farmers affected by heavy rainfall for the next three months, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said.
He made the announcement in response to a question from Kalim Uddin Ahmed, member of parliament for the Sunamganj-5 constituency, on Wednesday, April 29.
Raising an urgent public importance matter, Kalim Uddin said the haor areas, including Sunamganj, have been flooded due to continuous heavy rainfall. Farmers are cutting paddy with great difficulty. He called upon the prime minister to stand by the affected farmers.
Thanking Kalim Uddin, the prime minister said he had instructed the local administration of three haor districts, including Sunamganj, three days ago based on weather reports to take necessary measures if rainfall occurs.
Describing the suffering and losses of farmers in the haor areas as deeply painful, the prime minister said, "Even before this parliament session began this morning, I spoke with the disaster management minister. I instructed him to identify farmers affected by heavy rainfall in these three haor districts and some areas of Mymensingh, and to provide them with assistance for the next three months."
