Govt wants to define journalism, set code of ethics: Information Minister

Separating objective information from the unregulated flow of data is the biggest challenge of the present time, said Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan. He said the government wants to establish a clear policy and a well-defined framework for the media. To this end, initiatives have been taken to implement the Wage Board for journalists and ensure transparency in Television Rating Points (TRP).

The minister made the remarks while addressing a discussion titled 'What should be done for the welfare of journalists in Barishal division', organised by the Bangladesh Journalists Welfare Trust on Monday (July 27).

The Information Minister said that in this age of information technology, a vast amount of data is being generated and spread every day. Identifying truthful and objective information from this data is now a major challenge. Therefore, defining the journalism profession with a clear framework has become essential.

He said journalists must play an active role in defining the scope of journalism, as their opinions will be crucial in shaping the future structure of the profession.

Stressing the rights and welfare of journalists, Zahir Uddin Swapan said the government is working to create a permanent and transparent structure for journalists. As part of this, discussions have been held with stakeholders regarding the implementation of the Wage Board and the formulation of an overall media policy.

He said initiatives have been taken to eliminate irregularities in the TRP system of electronic media and ensure transparency.

Calling for responsible journalism, the Information Minister said journalists and all concerned must work together to maintain professional standards and create an effective and professional media environment.

Representatives of the Journalists Welfare Trust from Barishal division and senior journalists from various media outlets attended the event.
