'Govt will decide on referendum if parties fail to reach consensus'
The Advisory Council has expressed concern over political divisions regarding the proposed referendum and urged political parties to engage in discussions to reach a unified decision. However, if they fail to reach a consensus, the government will make its own decision, said Dr Asif Nazrul, Adviser on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.
Speaking at a press briefing after the council meeting on Monday, November 3, Dr Nazrul said, “Political parties have been asked to hold internal discussions and submit a joint decision on the referendum within a week. We have not given an ultimatum, only an appeal. We will wait, and the government will then take necessary steps as required.”
He added, “The government will not hold any further dialogue. Over the past fifteen years, anti-fascist political parties have made important decisions on their own initiative. They have protested together and faced persecution together. We hope they will once again present a united directive of their own accord.”
After receiving recommendations on implementing the July Charter, the interim government will take no further initiative to resolve disputes among political parties. They have been given a one-week timeframe to reach an agreement through mutual discussion.
The council meeting also reaffirmed plans to hold the national election in the first half of February 2026.
Dr Asif Nazrul stated, “A final decision must be made regarding the schedule and content of the referendum. Given the current context, there is no time to waste. Political parties have been urged to meet independently. If they fail to present a united directive, the government will decide accordingly.”
