Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon has said the government is committed to ensuring media freedom while fostering an environment that promotes responsible and accountable journalism.

Speaking as chief guest at a workshop in Dhaka aimed at formulating a framework for a National Media Commission on Thursday (June 18), the minister said media reform efforts are being carried out through consultation with all stakeholders as part of a broader initiative to strengthen democratic governance.

“The government is moving forward with reforms by engaging all relevant parties. For the first time in the country’s history, various stakeholders from the media sector have been brought onto a common platform, which will help create positive changes in the future,” he said at the event held at InterContinental Dhaka.

Swapon said the government would play a facilitating role in the reform process, adding that the initiative to establish a National Media Commission could provide a structured roadmap for future reforms in the media sector.

State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yasser Khan Chowdhury also addressed the workshop, emphasizing the importance of constructive and objective journalism in strengthening public accountability.

“No individual or institution is above mistakes. Responsible journalism should highlight shortcomings and irregularities so that corrective measures can be taken,” he said.

The workshop brought together media professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders to exchange views on the proposed commission, which is expected to play a key role in shaping future media governance and regulatory reforms in Bangladesh.
